Makes checking luggage easier, eliminates confusion

EVA Air is ending its two-system policy for checked bags, starting on June 23, 2022, making travel easier for passengers. The change ends the weight-based concept EVA has been using for international flights to/from Europe and Oceania and within Asia and increases baggage allowances for passengers on those routes. The airline will apply the piece-based concept for checked luggage on all its flights worldwide, making EVA’s policies consistent with those of its coshare partners and other Star Alliance members. EVA is the first airline in Taiwan to apply piece-concept baggage rules throughout its network. Under the piece concept, passengers booked in Royal Laurel/Premium Laurel/Business Class are allowed two pieces weighing up to 32kg (70lbs) each. Premium Economy and Economy Class passengers can check two pieces that weigh as much as 23kg (50lbs) each.

“We’ve been using two baggage-check systems since we launched our maiden flight, applying the piece concept on transpacific routes to and from the U.S. and Canada and the weight concept for passengers within Asia and to/from Europe and Oceania,” said EVA President Clay Sun. “The piece concept for checked baggage is used by other Star Alliance members and major international airlines worldwide. Our policy change makes it less confusing for passengers to check their luggage and more convenient for those connecting to other airlines. It also enables us to further improve airport and transit services by creating a smoother baggage-check and transfer process globally.”

The weight concept capped the checked baggage allowances for Economy Class passengers to/from Asia, Europe and Oceania at 30kg (66lbs). Comparing that system with one that’s piece-based:

*The piece concept for passengers to/from the U.S. and Canada is not changing. EVA has slightly adjusted the single-piece weight limit for Premium Economy.

EVA is accompanying its introduction of the new checked baggage policy with special fare family products designed especially for travelers with less baggage. Among them are an all-new Economy Class “Discount” fare available for travel on all routes and an affordable “Basic” fare with a free checked baggage allowance of 23kg (50lbs) on flights within Asia.

EVA’s Infinity MileageLands Diamond, Gold and Silver Card members can receive an allowance for an additional free checked bag, based on membership status. Once the new policy is fully adopted, EVA’s original extra checked bag policy, allowing one piece of luggage that weighs 23kg (50lb) or less and applying to passengers in all cabins, adjusts to one additional bag, based on booking class. Travelers can also use the EVA Prepaid Excess Baggage service and earn a 10 percent discount in the process.

As more countries enter a post-pandemic phase, EVA is diligently refining and improving its service quality. Aims to meet customers’ growing capacity needs

The EVA Air Board of Directors has authorized the purchase of one more Boeing 777 freighter that is expected to be delivered by the end of 2023. EVA now owns eight of these dedicated freighters and has contracted with Israel Aerospace Industry Corporation (IAI) to convert three of its Boeing 777-300ER passenger jets into cargo aircraft. By 2025, the carrier will have grown its cargo fleet to 12 freighters. The increased capacity will further strengthen EVA Air Cargo’s competitiveness in the airfreight market.

“We continually evaluate passenger and cargo market needs so that we can appropriately increase capacity, meet demand and enhance our risk management capabilities. We also regularly review our fleet composition and develop strategies that will best equip us to secure a competitive edge in these markets,” said EVA President Clay Sun.

“Boeing estimates that the air cargo market will increase at an annual compound growth rate of 4.0 to 4.6% over the next 20 years. By 2040, Boeing forecasts that the global freighter demand will climb by more than 70%. The Boeing 777 freighter is the world’s largest twin-engine air cargo aircraft. It has a maximum capacity of 106 tons, closely competing with the four-engine Boeing 747-400 freighter that can carry as much as 112 tons. Energy-efficient and environment-friendly, the 777 freighter performs exceptionally well in range, operating cost and reliability. Fully loaded, it can fly up to 5,000 nautical miles, making it the most popular type of freighter on the market.

EVA equipped its Boeing 777 freighters with the same turbofan engines that power its B777-300ER passenger aircraft. Its B777-300ER flight crews can easily transition to fly the dedicated freighters after training on differences between the aircraft and operations. In addition to its eight Boeing 777 freighters, EVA flies 34 B777-300ERs. Aims for Net Zero-Carbon Emissions by 2050

EVA Air seriously considers impacts of climate change and begins working now to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The Taiwan-based airline made its case for sustainability at the 65th annual conference of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), held online and cohosted by EVA. Clay Sun, the airline’s president, also encouraged his industry colleagues to fully commit to reopening travel and gradually reinvigorating the airline industry. EVA was the first Taiwan-based airline to promote the “Green Travel” Carbon Offset Program in 2017. As soon as a passenger buys a ticket on the EVA website, they can go to a dedicated website at https://evaair.co2analytics.com/home and calculate their carbon emissions based on seating class, flight distance and number of passengers in their party. Passengers can also choose to donate equal or optional amounts to support ClimateCare’s international carbon reduction project for “zero-carbon travel.”

EVA uses the more eco-friendly Boeing 777-300ERs and 787s as the backbone of its operations. It uses Electronic Flight Bags (EFB) fleetwide to replace paper manuals. It saves water and onboard service supplies by being flexible and making adjustments based on flight distance and numbers of passengers. It uses light-weight Unit Load Device (ULD) to increase loading weight substantially. And it has introduced its next generation of flight planning systems, enabling it to simply access the EVA data base to optimize flight routes and fuel requirements. EVA has also further improved its aircraft engine performance and fuel-efficiency by cleaning equipment. In 2020, EVA saved a total of 13,218 tons of fuel, reducing emissions by 41,636 tons of CO2e.

“Reaching for the sky with energy-savings, pursuing efficiency and becoming a leader for environmental protection” is a fundamental goal in every detail of operations and for the entire EVA management team. EVA pays close attention to domestic policies and global actions as it continues to build a comprehensive strategy that will advance reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. EVA urges every airline, government and fuel supplier to make sustainable aviation fuel available to the industry and develop newer technologies needed to support this objective and a sustainable future.
At the recent United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26), leaders representing different countries reached a consensus on addressing weather-related issues and explored ways to reduce greenhouse gas emission to achieve a zero-carbon goal. During the IATA 77th Annual General Meeting in October, airlines agreed on the same goal. EVA has emphasized the importance of this goal internally and pledged willingness to work closely with global organizations, in addition to putting its own plans into action to achieve the goal.
